With the opening of its Newport Beach location, City of Hope, a world-renowned research and treatment center for cancer, fulfilled its promise of speeding lifesaving treatments to Orange County. The patient-centric facility at 1601 Avocado Avenue offers access to acclaimed specialists with highly focused knowledge and unique cancer expertise in breast cancer, breast surgical oncology, precision prevention and early detection and more.

This is welcome news to Orange County residents like Kandace McMenomy, 39, of Laguna Beach, a two-time breast cancer survivor. Nearly 20 percent of patients with cancer leave the area for advanced cancer care, with many traveling to City of Hope’s main campus in Duarte – an up to two-hour commute. For the first time, residents have local access to City of Hope’s acclaimed specialists, who are backed by the powerful City of Hope clinical network.

And there’s more good news to come: The Newport Beach location is the first phase of City of Hope’s plans to invest $1 billion to develop and operate an Orange County regional cancer care network, featuring a world-class cancer campus of the future that will open in Irvine in 2021. Orange County’s only specialty hospital dedicated solely to treating and curing cancer will open in 2025.

City of Hope’s presence in Orange County meets a pressing community need. Despite their reputation for healthy living, Orange County residents have not beaten the 1 in 3 national statistic for cancer incidence.

Unique Expertise for Breast and Other Cancer is Closer Than Ever

When it comes to effectively fighting breast or any other kind of cancer, having access to specialists with intensely focused expertise helps ensure you get the right treatment at the right time. The specialty team at Newport Beach includes an internationally renowned lung cancer expert, a pioneer in kidney and bladder cancer and breast cancer experts Wade Smith, M.D., and Hang T. Dang, D.O., a surgical oncologist specializing in breast cancer surgery and aesthetic reconstruction.

Breakthroughs in Prevention and Early Detection

Recognizing the best way to fight cancer is to prevent it in the first place, City of Hope is offering an innovative Precision Prevention and Early Detection program in Newport Beach.

The program helps people who want to understand and address their risk factors and is led by Laura Goetz, M.D., M.P.H., a fierce believer in using every available tool to help prevent cancer. The program uses state-of-the-art techniques such as genetic risk assessments, biomarker panels and environmental exposure surveys.
